Teacher Spotlight - Mr. Zach Torgerson

Nurturing dreams and showing students what is possible is Mr. Zachary Lawrence Torgerson.  He celebrates his birthday on April 7th and was born in 1987.  His family consists of his son, Viktor, his mom, Mary, his sister, Vanessa, his brother in law, Doug, his nieces, Ally and Lyla, his sister, Laurie and his brother, Dylan.

He received his teaching degree at Morningside College.  He is in his 4th year of teaching, one year of subbing and he is on his 3rd year at River Valley.  He teaches Social Studies (specifically History and Political Science) to the 9th - 12th grade students.  He believes his students would be amazed to find out that he has 7 tattoos and has a 6 year old son.

His favorite thing to do for excitement is playing video games or a similar nerdy activity with his close friends.

Some of his favorites are:

  • The color black because it goes with everything.
  • Food is pizza because it is finest of all foods.
  • Book is "Fahrenheit 451" because it is an amazing commentary on modern culture and a warning against censorship.
  • Movie is "The Godfather Part II" because the intertwining stories make it the most perfect movie ever made.
  • Song is difficult to narrow it down to one but probably "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath.
  • Sport is football because it's by far the most entertaining sport.
  • Sports team is the Morningside Mustangs.  It doesn't matter which sport, he supports the Mustangs 110%.

His greatest thing about teaching is seeing the spark of excitement in students' eyes when they find a subject that interests or amuses them.

He shares, "My area of historical expertise is 20th Century World History."

Mr. Torgerson, thank you for all that you do!
